1880 Census, Sevier County, Tennessee

Wilcher C. Slayden was the son of my fourth great grandparents William Slaydon and Susannah Flippin.  As such, Wilcher was the brother of my third great grandfather Thomas Fielden Slaton.

Penelope C. France was Wilcher's second wife (it was the second marriage for both).  Rebecca A. Slaton was Wilcher's daughter with his first wife, Elizabeth (Betsy) Linville.  Martha E. Slaton and W.F. Slaton were his children with Penelope C. France.

William Braxton Bryan was the son of Franklin Bryan and Susannah.  The Franklin Bryan family settled first in Wear's Valley, and many of them moved to Sevierville.  They were from North Carolina, and they were apparently not related to my Bryan family.  William's wife was Rachel Louise McMahan.

Loftus Henry (Lofty) Catlett was the son of Samuel Catlett and Hannah.  As such, Lofty was the nephew of my fourth great grandfather Benjamin Catlett.

Jane (Jennie) Cowden age 55 was the daughter of Leonard C. (Len or Lynn) Cowden Sr. and unknown.

 

My third great grandfather James P. Catlett was the son of Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Loveday.  In about 1851, James married Sarah McMahan.  Sarah died in 1873 and James married Nancy Matilda Mullendore in 1876.  However, neither Sarah McMahan nor Nancy Matilda Mullendore was my third great grandmother.  The story of James P. Catlett is a bit more complicated than that.

Sarah F. (Sally) Nichols was my third great grandmother.  She had three children with a Catlett man from 1844 through 1849.  But there was a Nichols-Catlett feud, there was a Nichols-Catlett lawsuit, Sally and her children kept the Nichols surname, and a courthouse fire destroyed all the records.

Circumstantial evidence suggests very strongly that the father of Sally's children was a son of Benjamin Catlett.  Of Benjamin's sons, James P. Catlett seems most likely to have been the father of Sally's children.  There are two pieces of evidence supporting this conclusion.

One piece of evidence is the death certificate of John H. Nichols, which lists his parents as James C. Nichols and Sarah F. Nichols.  There was no James C. Nichols, and the reference to James C. Nichols was probably a reference to James Catlett Nichols who was really James Catlett.

The other piece of evidence is Sevier County warrant sworn out on 2 Aug 1851 by Sarah Nichols against James P. Catlett.  1851 is shortly after Sally Nichols and her Catlett man were broken up by the Nichols-Catlett feud.  That is, Sally's youngest child was born in 1849, and in the 1850 census she and her three children were living with her parents and using the surname Nichols.  I do not yet know why the record of the 1851 warrant was not destroyed in the 1856 courthouse fire.

James M. Catlett age 17 was the son of James P. Catlett and Sarah McMahan.  Carrie Catlett age 2 and Kate L. (Katie) Catlett age 1 were the children of James P. Catlett and Nancy Matilda Mullendore.

Sarah F. (Sallie) Nichols was my third great grandmother.  Mary and Nancy were daughters who never married.  Their brother (and my second great grandfather) was John H. Nichols.  The father of the three children was a Mr. Catlett.  As a result of a Nichols/Catlett feud and an 1850 Sevier County court case, the children and Sallie kept the Nichols name.  John H. Nichols would have been in Missouri in 1880.

William S. (Will) Catlett was born 3 Jun 1817, the son of my fourth great grandparents Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Lovelady/Loveday.  As such, Will was the brother of my third great grandfather James P. Catlett.  The fact that James P. Catlett was my third great grandfather is a bit of a guess, but there is evidence to support the guess.  See the census entry for James P. Catlett for more information.  But even if James P. Catlett was not my third great grandfather, then surely one of his brothers was.  So in any case, it is extremely likely that Benjamin Catlett and Nancy Lovelady/Loveday were my fourth great grandparents.

I do not know who John S. Bryan is.  His wife appears to be Elizabeth Hedrick/Headrick married 10 Nov 1868.  William A. appears to be William Anderson Bryan, born 13 Sep 1869.

Joseph A. Bryan was the son of Franklin Bryan and Susannah.  Franklin was not one of mine.  He lived in Wears Valley rather than Dumplin Valley, and he was out of North Carolina rather than out of Virginia.  Joseph's birth places in 1880 should therefore have been listed as TN NC TN rather than as TN TN TN.  I wonder if Franklin was related to David Anderson Bryan, who also was from North Carolina and who also was not one of mine.

One might suspect that Franklin and Susannah were married about 1835 in Tennessee, probably in Sevier County.  But 1835 was before the courthouse fire and I have not found an alternative marriage record (a minister's record, for example) that would give us Susannah's surname.

Joseph was married well after the courthouse fire.  We therefore know that his wife was Elizabeth G. Nichols, daughter of Alexander Carmichale Black (Alex) Nichols and Margaret Cunningham Montgomery.  Elizabeth was the great granddaughter of Flayl Nichols and Nancy Ann Hatcher.  Flayl was the brother of my fifth great grandfather John James Nichols Jr.

James E. Catlett was the son of Samuel Catlett and Hannah.  His wife was Dolly Ann (Anna) Hatcher.

Samuel Catlett was the son of my fifth great grandparents Reuben Catlett and unknown.  As such, Samuel was the brother of my fourth great grandfather Benjamin Catlett.  Samuel's census entry correctly reports that Reuben was born in England.

The surname of Samuel's wife Hannah is unknown.

Joshua Cate was the son of Madison Cate and Martha Underwood.  He married L. Catherine Thomas.

James Harvey Underwood was the son of Hiram Underwood and Sarah Lewis.  Mary Douglas was the daughter of Alexander Douglas and Rhoda Routh.

This is Elijah Cate and Nancy E. Petty, married 9 Apr 1865.  Elijah was the son of Enyard Abraham Cate and Lavina Hickman.

 

Robert Sneed (Dock) Underwood was the son of George Underwood and Nancy Elizabeth Conner.  His wife was Elizabeth Hickman.

 

Nancy Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bryan age 25 was the daughter of my third great grandparents Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly) Ann Cate.  As such, she was the sister of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

Thomas S. (Tom) Roberts age 37 was the son of George Roberts and Rachel Huff.

Andrew Roberts age 14, Adellia (Del) Roberts age 12, and Alice Roberts age 8 were the children of Tom Roberts and his first wife Margaret R. Lawson.  Mary A. (Mollie) Roberts age 4, Lavator B. Roberts age 2, and Ida Jane Roberts age 5/12 were the children of Lizzie Bryan and Tom Roberts.

Enoch Pleasant (Pless) Underwood age 41 was the son of my third great grandparents William Ramey Underwood and Martha Langston.  As such, Pless was the brother of my second great grandmother Malissa Emmaline Underwood.

Susan M. Pollard age 35 was the daughter James C. Pollard and Cynthia Cate.  Cynthia Cate in turn was a granddaughter both of my fifth great grandparents John Cate Sr. and Mary, and of my fifth great grandparents John Underwood and Mary Kirby, so this family is a particularly tangled web.

The children enumerated in 1880 were Harvey Nelson Underwood age 18, Margaret (Mag) Underwood age 15, Ephriam Sneed Underwood age 13, Ophelia Adline (Oph) Underwood age 9, Cynthia Caroline (Cal or Callie) Underwood age 6, James William Underwood age 3, and Alexander Andrew (Alex) Underwood age 1.

Ephraim J. Underwood was the son of Thomas Underwood and Elizabeth Johnson.

William Ramey Underwood was my third great grandfather.  William was the son of Enoch Underwood and Enoch's first cousin Nancy Underwood.  Elizabeth Green age 47 was William's second wife.

William's middle name came from his paternal grandmother Mary Ramey who married his paternal grandfather Thomas Underwood.

Lewis Underwood was the son of Hiram Underwood and Sarah Lewis.  His wife was Mary Ann Long.

 

 

 

James B. Underwood was the son of Thomas Underwood and Elizabeth Johnson.  Mary Jane McCleary was the daughter of Payne McCleary.  James was apparently born in Missouri, but the family wisely returned to Tennessee.  James was in the Union army in the Civil War.

 

 

Thomas Drinnen is buried at the Bryan-Drinnen-Cate Cemetery in Sevier County.  He was probably the brother of William H. Drinnen, who is also buried at the cemetery.  Thomas's son William Luke Drinnen, age 9 in this census, is also buried at the cemetery.  Thomas Drinnen's wife was Mary Jane Bryan, daughter of William Enyard Bryan and Amanda Keener.

Henry Clay Cate was the son of Elisha Cate and Mary Elizabeth Newman.  His wife was Mary Jane Johnson.  She married (1) Thomas Lowery Thornburg.  Thomas Thornburg was killed while serving in the Union Army in the Civil War.  The wedding record for Henry Clay Cate says he married Mary Jane Thornburg.  I. Nelson Cate married Ann Elizabeth Underwood.  Harriet Cate married her first cousin Perry Cate.  Sarah was Henry's sister Sarah Adeline Cate born 8 Oct 1823.  She never married.  Perry who married Harriet was Allen Perry Cate, son of Allen Fitzgerald Cate and Priscilla Catherine (Catherine) Perry.  Henry Clay Cate and Allen Fitzgerald Cate were brothers.

Edward L. McCall age 5 was the bondsman when my great grandparents William Harley (Harley) Bryan and Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison were married.

Harley and Edward were first cousins.  Harley was the son of Malissa Emmaline Underwood and William Allen (Will) Bryan.  Edward was the son of Malinda E. Underwood and James McCall.  Malissa and Malinda were twins.  Malinda died on 23 May 1880, shortly before this census entry was recorded.  Hence, Malinda appeared on the 1880 Mortality Schedule for Sevier County.

Madison Cate was the son of my third great grandparents Joshua Cate and Elizabeth (Betsey) Wilhite.  As such, Madison was the brother of my third great grandmother Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.

Martha A. Underwood age 47 was the daughter of George Underwood and Elizabeth Kymes/Kimes.  As such, Martha was the niece of my fourth great grandmother Nancy Underwood who married her first cousin Enoch Underwood.

 

Monkey John Underwood was the son of Enoch Underwood and Nancy Underwood.  John was married twice, but all the children were by his first wife Ellen Henry.  I don't have the date for his second marriage, but it apparently was after the 1880 census.

Ira Nelson Underwood was the son of Enoch Underwood and Nancy Underwood (first cousins).  Nancy Catherine Green was the daughter of James Green and Annie Patterson.

Oliver Leonidas Underwood married Nancy A. Derieux 15 Jan 1880 in Knox County.  Nancy was the daughter of Peter Derieux and Sarah Janaway.  Oliver was the son of Ira Nelson Underwood and Nancy Catherine Green.

Rufus White Underwood was the son of Monkey John Underwood and Ellen Henry.  Sarah Pollard was the daughter of John Pollard.

Ira Cate age 48 was the son of Rev. Elijah Cate and Susannah Underwood.  Elijah was the son of my of my fifth great grandparents John Cate Sr. and Mary.  As such, Elijah was the brother of my fourth great grandfather Joshua Cate.  Susannah was the daughter of my fifth great grandparents John Underwood and Mary Kirby.  As such, Susannah was the sister of my fourth great grandmother Nancy Underwood.

Suzanna Luzetta (Luzetta) Underwood age 31 was the daughter of my third great grandparents William Ramey Underwood and Martha Langston.  As such Luzetta was the sister of my second great grandgrandmother Malissa Emmaline Underwood.

Luzetta Underwood was the grandniece of Ira Cate's mother Susannah Underwood.  The net effect is that Luzetta Underwood and Ira Cate were first cousins once removed who married.

Ira Cate and Suzanna Luzetta (Luzetta) Underwood were married 18 Mar 1872 in Sevier County.  Luzetta was Ira's third wife.  Martha, Luther, Ellis, and Charles F. Cate were the children of Ira Cate and Luzetta.  Adaline, Sarah, William, and Nancy L. were the children of Ira Cate and his first wife Malinda Susan Underwood.  Nathanial was the son of Ira Cate and his second wife Sarah (Sadie) Newman.

Hamilton Harvy (Harvy) Cate was the son of Rev. Elijah Cate and Susannah Underwood.  As such, Harvy was the nephew of my fourth great grandfather Joshua Cate.  Harvy also was the nephew of my fourth great grandmother Nancy Underwood.

Hamilton's wife Julia Ann Pollard apparently died before the 1880 census.  However, he was listed as married rather than as widowed.

This is Perry Marshall Cate and his second wife Mary Moore.  Perry was the son of Joshua Cate and Elizabeth (Betsey) Wilhite.  Mary was the daughter of Zachariah Chaney (Chaney) Moore and Martha (Patsy) Allen.  I don't know who James and Elonzo are.  Sarah C. Cate (Moore) was the daughter of Perry Marshall Cate and his first wife Sarah Underwood.  Minnie J. Moore married Joseph Enoch Underwood.  John P. was John Perry (Perry)Moore who married Mabel Underwood.  William was William H. Moore who married Minnie Hardin.  George Moore married Janice Byrd.  Mary was Mary Mandy Moore who married Luther Thurman.  I can't identify John Moore.

William Enyard Bryan age 64 was the son of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate.  As such, William was the brother of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

William Enyard Bryan was clearly named for his maternal grandparents William P. Cate and Mary Enyard.  William was the first son, and Peter H. Bryan was the second son.  Peter H. Bryan was clearly named for his paternal grandfather Peter Bryan.  It therefore seems very likely that Peter H. Bryan was named for both of his paternal grandparents, and that his full name was probably Peter Hubbard Bryan.

Amanda Keener age 61 was the daughter of George T. Keener and Margaret (Peggy) Harris.

Rufus A. Bryan age 25 married Martha Cordelia (Cordie) Elder 10 Jan 1880.  It seems puzzling that he would have been enumerated with his parents in the 1880 census and that he would have been listed as single.

Martha Ellen (Ellen) Bryan age 31 was the widow of William Manning Cate.

Bettie Sanders was the daughter of Fidillo D. (Dillo) Sanders and Sarah Eveline (Eveline) Bryan.  Eveline had died in 1871, so Bettie was being raised by her grandparents.

John L. Cate was the son of Lee Cate and Nancy Elder.  He married Mahalia (Haly) Smith.

Nancy Elder was the widow of Lee Cate.  She was the daughter of Charles Thomas Elder and Elizabeth Underwood.  Lee Cate was the son of Joshua Cate and Elizabeth (Betsey) Wilhite.

Jesse Thomas Cate was the son of James Baldwin Cate and Sarah (Sallie) Davis.  Caroline (Carrie) Ventis was his first wife.  They were married 19 Jan 1878, and she died 1883/1884.

I don't know who this is -- possibly George Washington Cate, son of Greenberry B. (Green) Cate and Nancy Simmons???

I have not a clue.

My second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan age 30 was born 8 Sep 1849 in Tennessee.  He was the son of Peter H. Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.

My second great grandmother Malissa Emmaline Underwood age 25 was born 11 Nov 1855 in Sevier County, Tennessee.  She was the daughter of William Ramey Underwood and Martha Langston.

Will and Malissa were married 25 Sep 1872 in Sevier County, Tennessee.

Silas Amberson Bryan age 5 was born 7 Dec 1874.  Uncle Silas married Amanda Melzina (Mandy) Slaton.  My great grandfather William Harley (Harley) Bryan age 4 was born 12 Feb 1876 in Sevier County, Tennessee.  He married Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison.  Samuel C. Bryan age 1 was born 9 Apr 1879 and died 10 Jun 1881.

Ahaz W. Bryan was the son of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate.  As such, he was the brother of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

Margaret Callahan age 57 was the daughter of Samuel Callahan and Milly Underwood.  As such, Margaret was the granddaughter of my fifth great grandparents Thomas Underwood and Mary Ramey.

Sarah Elizabeth (Sallie) Bryan age 23 was the daughter of Ahaz and Margaret.  David Parmely McCampbell age 25 was the son of James M. McCampbell and Juliett Augusta Edgar.  Sarah and David were married on 14 Oct 1879, and hence had been married for less than a year at the time of this census enumeration.

John Greenwood/Greenberry Bryan age 27 was the son of my third great grandparents Peter Hubbard Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.  As such, John was the brother of my second great grandfather William Allen (Allen) Bryan.

John's wife was Sarah Elizabeth (Sallie) McMahan age 19.  I do not know who her parents were.

John and Sallie were married on 1 Nov 1877 in Sevier County.  They were living next to John's father who was in house number 183 (see below).

Ollie Frances Bryan age 1 was born 20 Sep 1878.  She later married Alex Andrew Underwood.

Peter H. Bryan age 61 and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate age 51 were my third great grandparents.

Peter was the son of Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate.

Polly Ann Cate was the daughter of Joshua Cate and Betsy Wilhite.

Peter and Polly Ann were married about 1847.  My second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan was born in 1849 and was married in 1872.  Therefore he was no longer living with his parents at the time of the 1880 census.

James B. (Jimmie) Douglass age 7 later married Mary (Mollie) Roberts.  Mollie was the daughter of Thomas S. (Tom) Roberts and Nancy Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bryan.  Lizzie was the daughter of my third great grandparents Peter Hubbard Bryan and Mary Ann (Polly Ann) Cate.  As such, Lizzie was the sister of my second great grandfather William Allen (Will) Bryan.

Eliza Addie (Addie) Douglass age 26 married James Thomas R. (Thomas) Bryan on 7 Dec 1880.  Addie died on 9 Oct 1883.

James Thomas R. (Thomas) Bryan was the son of Robert Reedy Bryan and Rebecca A. Lankford.  As such, Thomas was the nephew of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

Manerva Case Bryan and Alcy Keziah Darcus Bryan were daughters of Allen S. Bryan Sr. and Elizabeth McSpadden.  As such, they were nieces of my fifth great grandfather Peter Bryan.  Contrary to what this census entry might indicate, I believe that Elizabeth McSpadden was born in Virginia rather than in Tennessee.

Thomas Fletcher Saffell was the son of Samuel Saffell and Elizabeth Cox.

This is "Shaky John" Underwood, son of George Underwood and Elizabeth Kimes.  Mary was his second wife Mary (Polly) Ferguson.

Thomas L. Cate was the son of Thomas H. Cate and Mary Rebecca Lawrence.  He married Dorcas Hamilton.

Thomas H. Cate and Mary Rebecca (Rebecca) Lawrence were living with one of their sons (either Thomas or George), but I can't tell for sure which one until I check the census microfilm.

This is George W. Cate, son of Thomas H. Cate and Mary Rebecca Lawrence.  George married Orlena Goodwin, who apparently died before 1880.  Emma is Emma Orlena Cate who married Robert Martin Bales.

Elisha Porter (Porter) Cate Jr. age 48 was the son of Elisha Porter Cate and Mary Elizabeth Newman.  Mary J. Drinnen age 40 was the daughter of John Drinnen and Elizabeth Mills.

Elisha Cate was the son of John Cate Jr. and Mary Ann Koontz, and the grandson of my fifth great grandparents John Cate Sr. and Mary.  Mary Elizabeth Newman was the daughter of Joseph Newman and Catherine (Caty) Cate, and the granddaughter of my fifth great grandparents William P. Cate and Mary Enyard.

Ida Bell Cate age 2 later married Thomas Allen (Allen) Bryan.  Allen was the son of William Enyard Bryan and Amanda Keener, and the grandson of my fourth great grandparents Thomas C. Bryan Sr. and Nancy Cate.  As such, Allen was the nephew of my third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan.

This is Albert McClain and Ann Elizabeth (Betsey) Johnson.  Some records give her name as Betsey Ann Johnson.  Albert McClain was the son of a Mr. McClain and Mary Catherine Cate.  He changed his name to Cate.  Mary age 55 is Albert's mother Mary Catherine Cate.  Mary Catherine Cate in turn was the daughter of Elisha Cate and Mary Elizabeth Newman.

William Henderson (Hense) Underwood was the son of George Underwood and Elizabeth Kimes.  Rhoda Underwood was Henderson's second wife.  His first wife was Rhoda's sister Elizabeth Underwood.  Rhoda and Elizabeth were both first cousins (half first cousins, actually) of Henderson Underwood.  They were daughters of Joel Underwood, George's half brother.

John Wesley Bryan was the son of David A. Bryan and Frances (Fanny) Acuff.  He married Mary A. McNutt on 13 Nov 1870 in Sevier County, Tennessee.  I am not sure of David A. Bryan's exact ancestry, but he does not appear to have been descended from Peter Bryan of Rockingham County, Virginia.

This is probably Elijah Richard Cate, son of Hamilton Harvy Cate and Julian Ann Pollard.  He married Sarah Belle Derieaux 7 Jun 1883 in Knox County, Tennessee.

Joshua Cate was the son of James T. Cate and Elizabeth Lindsey, and the grandson of John Cate Sr.  His wife was Elizabeth (Betsey) Lindsey.  They are the 62 and 63 year old, respectively.  Their son Abraham Cate was born 22 Feb 1843.  Abraham's wife was Minerva Huffaker.

John Thomas Underwood was the son of Thomas Underwood and Elizabeth Johnson.  His wife was Maria Jane Covington.

Joseph (Joel) Underwood was the son of Thomas Underwood and Elizabeth Johnson.  His wife was Julia Bales.

Thomas Underwood was the son of John Underwood and Ms. Kirby.  His wife was Elizabeth Johnson.

William T. Underwood was the son of Thomas Underwood and Elizabeth Johnson.  His first wife was Martha Bales.

 

Eliza Aramantha Caroline (Caroline) Huffaker married (1) William M. Bryan and married (2) William Thomas.  Katie and Lulia were children of her second marriage with William Thomas.  Laura, Nancy, Linna, and Willie C. were children of her first marriage with William M. Bryan.  Laura Minerva Bryan married Richard S. Bassett, and I assume he died between 1875 and 1880.  Nancy was Nancy Kathleen Bryan.  Linna was Malinda Josephine Bryan.  Willie was William Caroline (sic) Bryan, who was male.  His middle name came from his mother.
