According to Elizabeth Cate Manly's book about the Bryan family, Allen Ludwell Bryan Jr. married first Ellen Vesnor. Further research indicates that there is no such surname as Vesnor, and that ECM probably meant Vernor. Another spelling variation is Verner. I do not know if Varner is yet another spelling variation, or if the census enumerator just got it wrong. But in any case, Narcissa Ellen (Ellen) Verner age 10 from this census entry later married Allen Ludwell Bryan Jr. and was the "Ellen Vesnor" from ECM's book. Allen Ludwell Bryan Jr. was the son of Allen Ludwell Bryan Sr. and Phoebe Boggess. Allen Ludwell Bryan Sr. was the son of my fifth great grandparents Peter Bryan and Betty Hubbard, and the brother of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr. Ellen Verner was the daughter of Caleb Verner and Jane O. Hill. |

James Jasper Adams Jr. age 10 later married Paralee Phoebe (Phoebe) Bryan. Phoebe was the daughter of Peter Grantham Bryan and Mariah Wright. Peter Grantham Bryan was the son of Allen Ludwell Bryan Sr. and Phoebe Boggess. As such, Peter was the nephew of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr. Peter Grantham Bryan almost certainly was named for his grandfather Peter Bryan. My third great grandfather Peter H. Bryan also was almost certainly named for his grandfather Peter Bryan. Peter Grantham Bryan and Peter H. Bryan were first cousins. James Jasper Adams Jr. was the son of James Jasper Adams Sr. and Lucinda Smith. Lucinda died on 18 Apr 1850, shortly before the census was taken. |

According to Elizabeth Cate Manly's book about the Bryan family, Allen Ludwell Bryan Jr. married first Mattie Holliday. I believe that Martha Holliday age 8 from this census entry was Allen's second wife. She was the only Martha or Mattie Holliday in Monroe County. The marriage in 1877 in Monroe County was A. L. Bryan to M. J. Holladay. Martha's brother James was living next door to A. L. and Mattie Bryan in the 1880 census. Bryan Sr. Martha (Mattie) Holliday was the daughter of James W. Holliday and Mary. |

Phoebe Boggess age 61 was the daughter of Bennett Boggess and Vashti Hubbard. In 1850, Phoebe was the widow of Allen Ludwell Bryan Sr. Allen died about 1845 in Alabama before the family moved to Mississippi. The transcription of Phoebe's entry is correct. The original enumeration incorrectly listed her as a male rather than as a female. Allen Ludwell Bryan Sr. was born in Jefferson County (now Sevier County), Tennessee. He was the son of my fifth great grandparents Peter Bryan and Betty Hubbard. As such, he was the brother of my fourth great grandfather Thomas C. Bryan Sr. Allen moved to Alabama, and Thomas stayed in Tennessee. The males living in the household were all sons of Allen Ludwell Bryan Sr. and Phoebe Boggess. They were
The females are less certain.
